The Pain Institute University of Miami Hospital is committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate, multidisciplinary quality medical care to patients suffering from acute and chronic pain syndromes.

Patients with pain from any of a variety of sources can receive an independent medical evaluation, a multidisciplinary analysis of their pain syndrome, and a course of treatment catered to their individual needs.  The specially trained health care professionals at the Pain Institute combine the disciplines of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Interventional Pain Management to offer patients a unique, comprehensive approach to treating pain conditions.

Access to the Pain Institute
The process at the Pain Institute begins with a complete medical history review and physical examination.  The patient’s evaluation may also require patients to undergo diagnostic testing such as radiologic exams, nerve conduction studies, diagnostic nerve blocks, discograms, as well as psychological evaluations.  Being located at University of Miami Hospital, the Pain Institute provides patients with easy access to state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies on-site.

Painful Conditions
Our multidisciplinary approach caters to conditions such as:

  • Arthritis and painful joint syndromes
  • Cancer pain
  • Headaches
  • Low back pain and sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Discogenic pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Myofascial pain
  • Neuropathies
  • Chronic abdominal and pelvic pain

Treatment Methods
The highly skilled health care professionals at the Pain Institute will develop a treatment program that is cost-efficient, thorough, and designed for the patient’s individual needs in order to achieve the most optimal level of functionality for all patients.  Treatment methods may include a combination of the following:

  • Medications
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Joint injections
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Anesthetic nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency lesioning

These therapies may be combined with rehabilitation modalities and/or psychotherapy, depending on the individual patient’s need.  The determined treatment will be discussed in detail with the patient during their visit.
