Psychiatric Services
The wide choice of programs available allows each patient to receive the level of services which will best suit their needs at each stage of their progress. Although each program has its own guidelines, patients move among the programs as their condition dictates.
Your physician directs your care through multidisciplinary team conferences and day-to-day communication with the University of Miami Hospital staff. You will find an overall willingness on the part of the staff to listen and do their utmost to meet the needs of both the patient and the physician.
The promise of continuity of care for all patients means that you or your loved ones can receive mental behavioral health services at the University of Miami Hospital Department of Psychiatric Services from the onset of illness to the conclusion of treatment.
Psychiatric Admissions and Referral Intake Center
The Psychiatric Admission and Referral Intake Center coordinates patient reservations and admissions. The screening team will verify your insurance coverage and work closely with you and your physician in every way possible to arrange for cost-effective use of your healthcare dollars.
New patients are screened for seriousness of conditions to determine which of the University of Miami Hospital programs will best provide the level of services needed. Appointments can be scheduled for a member of the team to screen a patient at home or at another facility. The Center also conducts psychiatric evaluations of emergency room patients and referral screenings of medical or surgical hospital patients, when requested.
Inpatient Mental Health Services
At University of Miami Hospital, services for patients who are admitted to stay in the hospital, or inpatient services, include voluntary admissions and 23-hour observation services (covered under many managed care contracts).
Our patients stay in a private room, each with its own bathroom, television and telephone, on one of three psychiatric inpatient units on the seventh and tenth floors of the hospitals patient tower. University of Miami Hospital is one of the few facilities in the South Florida community which provides private rooms to psychiatric service patients.
In the late 90s all 104 patient rooms were completely renovated. In addition a music therapy room, an exercise room, a recreational therapy room and an occupational therapy room were added.
University of Miami Hospital Psychiatric Services is also a private receiving facility for involuntary examinations in compliance with State of Florida Mental Health statutes (commonly referred to as the Baker Act).
Under the guidance of the medical director, inpatient services are provided by the nurse manager and other psychiatric social workers, case managers, occupational, recreational and music therapists, a pharmacist, a dietician and the full support of the hospitals ancillary services.
In addition to individual psychotherapy with the patients own attending psychiatrist, inpatient treatment may include:
- Neuropsychological testing
- Crisis intervention
- Group psychotherapy
- Music therapy
- Recreational therapy
- Occupational therapy
